UX DESIGN CASE STUDIES

One of the ironies of UX design is that a great user experience will usually go unnoticed. But that only stresses the value of usability—by navigating seamlessly through a website, users are more likely to perform the intended actions, such as purchasing a product or filling out a form. Our user experience and interaction design work has been central to the usability and effectiveness of our clients’ websites.

ICUSTOM SHIRTS

The result of meticulous planning, testing and refining, ICUSTOMSHIRTS truly embodies a user-centric approach to web design. Usability complements aesthetic to create a design interface that guides users seamlessly through the dress-shirt customization process, with every eventuality taken into consideration. It took extensive UX design and user interface refinement, but the finished product ensures that first-time visitors will over time become loyal members of the ICUSTOMSHIRTS club.

Bird Construction

Bird Construction has earned a reputation for venturing beyond the ordinary to take on the most complex projects in the industry. Bird’s website had to deliver the same kind of flow and logical composition that characterize its structures, and that meant the UX design process had to pass the stress test. The site balances a progressive visual approach with solid structure, which together make navigating through the content-rich resource a breeze. Users will find it easy to browse hundreds of projects, apply for jobs, interact with multimedia and much more.

Apple Self Storage

The new Apple Self Storage website required usability above all else. We integrated 3D modeling to make it easy for people to visualize and decide on a storage space right there, without needing to see the physical location. An intuitive but detailed storage reservation process gives users a variety of ways to arrive at their ideal storage solution. We presented the entire experience in a friendly user interface that even less skilled web users will enjoy.

Vinyl-Pro

Modern windows are much more advanced and complex than the windows of old, and that complicates the process of finding just the right product. Design of the Vinyl-Pro website took an ambitious turn in order to provide users with the information and guidance they needed to make a sound decision for their home. Wherever possible the graphics and animations do the talking, leaving text to play a supporting role. Browsing an extensive product catalogue and comparing energy performance ratings is incredibly simple, while a virtual viewer lets users visualize their customized choices in a 3D, real-time display.

MEET OUR WEBSITE DESIGN TEAM

No two websites are exactly alike, and that means every web design project at ITW receives careful attention from our user experience design team. We combine in-depth research with numerous revisions to layout and functionality until arriving at just the right balance for an optimal user experience.

Boston Pizza Franchising Website Goes Live!

This project is the first (but not the last) collaboration between ITW and Boston Pizza—Canada’s top casual-dining brand, with more than 370 restaurants from coast-to-coast. After months of planning, hard work and refining, we’re proud to be able to add this website to our portfolio. More importantly, the client is happy with the results, and early traffic statistics are promising. How it all started Before this project, franchising occupied a…

Five Must-Haves for Successful B2B Website Design

On the surface there’s not much to distinguish a B2B website from a B2C one. After all, in both cases the goal is to make a positive connection with people searching for a specific product or service. Digging deeper, though, you’ll find that an effective website is one that caters to its target audience. These five elements of successful B2B web design consider the unique needs and challenges of business owners.…

WHAT IS UX DESIGN?

As important as content is in web design, without usability a website lacks that connective force that keeps people longer and turns them into either customers or repeat visitors. The idea of user-centred design emerged as a way to bring the audience back into the process; that is, to create websites that did more than just show off the designer’s capabilities. As businesses and organizations started asking more of their websites—to sell products or services, to field inquiries, to showcase a portfolio—user experience design was born.

UX design is a broad concept, but it essentially refers to the process of scripting and planning for user interactions on the site. In some cases, such as a brochure website or even a blog, usability takes a backseat to content; it’s still important in the sense that visitors need to be able to navigate the site easily, but opportunities for interaction are limited and the site just isn’t required to do much. However, increasingly businesses want their website to take over roles once performed in their physical environment, and this level of functioning doesn’t come without planning.

WHY IS USER-CENTERED DESIGN IMPORTANT?

When someone uses technical jargon while speaking to you, or maybe references the punch line to a joke you’ve never heard before, it shows at best ignorance and at worst a deliberate disregard your feelings. Web design is no different—by claiming to speak to a certain audience and then creating a user experience that couldn’t possibly be enjoyed by that audience, you will have alienated everyone. We recognize user-centered design absolutely critical to success today, especially as websites serve as the main point of contact between customers and businesses. If a website ignores what’s best for its users, it’s difficult to imagine that company behaving any differently in person.

Designing a user experience that your target market will enjoy requires a ground-up approach. It begins with research and a client consultation, carries over to the information architecture, guides creative design and then influences how interactions and functionalities will unfold. We do the research to identify your users, then we implement a plan to give them the best possible experience while on your website.

UX DESIGN AT ITW

At ITW we view this process as vital to both the immediate and long-term success of a website. High bounce rates—when a visitor leaves a site after viewing just one page—are one sign of poor usability, but often by understanding the target market and best practice for web design we can deliver something positive. By performing A/B testing with different user interface designs or by tracking web traffic statistics we can refine the user experience even further.
